5 Signs of Stroke and Risk Factors

5 Signs of Stroke and Risk Factors

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the world. It happens when there is no longer any blood circulating through the brain because of a blood clot. Your brain needs oxygen to function, so when there is no supply of it, the cells start to die. These are the signs you will see if someone is having a stroke:

  1. The person’s face is drooping from one side of the body.
  2. There is arm or leg weakness on one side of the body.
  3. There is a loss of balance or motor coordination.
  4. The person has slurred speech.
  5. The person has sudden confusion and trouble in understanding.

If you see anyone have these signs, call 911 right away! Time is very important in ensuring that the patient will still be well. Anyone of all ages can have a stroke, but here are the list of factors that increase your risk of having it:

  • Cigarette Smoking.

The components of a cigarette, nicotine and carbon monoxide, both damage your lungs and cardiovascular system. It decreases the blood supply in your body too, making you more susceptible to other diseases and illnesses.

  • Not Having a Healthy and Balanced Diet.

If you eat fatty and unhealthy food, you are at risk of higher blood pressure, which contributes to a higher chance of getting a stroke. If you start eating healthier today, you decrease your chances of getting illnesses. Drink at least 8 glasses a day to flush out unwanted toxins in your body.

  • Being Physically Inactive.

It is advised that you have at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day like walking, jogging, or climbing up the stairs. This helps your cardiovascular system regulate itself, and it helps you drink more water.

  • Family History.

Do you notice doctors asking about your family’s medical history? This is because your heredity is commonly connected to your physical being today. If your parent or grandparent has had a stroke, you are at a higher risk to have it too.
